Hurricane Betting Leads to Unlikely
Philanthropy
I can't quite describe this
morally ambiguous situation that an online gambling site owned by WagerWeb.com
has created. The online gambling company has started a section of its site that
is dedicated to taking bets on all things concerning the upcoming hurricane
season. This type of novelty betting is usually not taken seriously, but given
the grave effect of last years hurricane season on the Gulf Coast this type of
online gambling activity can come across as particularly in bad taste.
So in response to what could
have easily backfired for the online gambling site, WagerWeb is officially
donating all of the proceeds form its Hurricane Betting section to the American
Red Cross. This seems like a close save from being officially being pegged as a
soulless online gambling site, but the donation the the Red Cross is positive no
matter how shallow or twisted the donator may be.
The online gambling site does
seem to be taking the situation seriously and not marketing it as a laughing
matter,
"Although we base our odds on requests by the public, we also feel we have an
obligation to give back to the communities where our bettors reside, so this was
the perfect solution. This is a win-win situation for our bettors and the
inevitable victims of the unfortunate but natural hurricanes and tropical storms
coming our way.” One way or another their questionable betting topics have won
the online gambling site some unsolicited publicity on such news programs as CNN
all looking into what seems like a testament to out growing gambling obsessed
culture, no matter the taboo.
