Online Gambling Addicts Grow In U.S.
For a pastime that
is apparently illegal in the United States there sure do seem to be a lot of
people not heed that statute and becoming admitted online gambling addicts. In
the state of West Virginia only the number of people addicted to online gambling
is three time higher than it was three years ago. At the turn of the century the
state's counselors had never had a person with a problem specific to online
gambling, now they are up to sixty people who need regular treatment for
the highly accessible form of gambling.
Online gambling is
proving to be a formidable force for young people in particular given the high
proficiency rate that they have for technology in general. The increased of
popularity of television shows like "Celebrity Poker Showdown" and an increasing
prevalence of online gambling advertising that is seeping into the mainstream
with a focus on young males is instigating a rapid increase in addictive online
gambling habits that professionals did not seem to be prepared for.
"It's like it came out of nowhere, What we're finding is it's
starting with adolescents who are so computer savvy these days, and it's just
taking hold. It's so easy to do, it's anonymous and I can just see it coming
like a train." There is also the increasingly large market of online casino
that, after years of being ignored has grown to three thousand strong with
particularly no form of strict regulation. Online gambling will need to be
regulated to the point of cutting of certain players when excessive use is
detected, and that means an even more formidable feat will need to occur. Online
gambling sites will need to keep their own greed in check.
