Son's Online Gambling Debt Fuels Father

One of the most looming arguments against online gambling is that it promotes underage gambling. Well, this story is not necessarily going to dispute that. A twenty -two year boy from England had started a gambling addiction only four years before when he began to qualify to receive credit cards and then began casually playing fruit slot machines and making bets on sports. This pastime grew to the point of addiction and he then turned to the ease and accessibility of online gabling to feed that addiction.

At the height of his addiction he was watching his younger sisters while his parents where away and he stole his parents credit card and binge on the online gambling sites for one last time, racking up a thirty thousand pound debt on anything from coin flips to sports bets. "There were never any restrictions. I could just gamble with any amount I wanted. Sometimes I could win more than £10,000 on the turn of a card. My grip on reality became warped because I didn't actually see the money. It was all on screen. When it dawned on me how much I'd lost I went into a state of shock." He shares how disorienting the experience became and how quickly he was able to snowball into a really bad state.

His father, a mortgage broker, took control of the situation and brought his son's delinquency to the attention of the court system in order to seek discipline and help for his son's condition. The judge gave him two hundred hours of public service and a supervision order after he was charged with seven count of theft. His father, understands that his son is to blame for his own actions and has a responsibility to pay for those mistakes, but is also not letting the online gambling sites and credit card companies escape from their portion of the blame, "The sites he got on to only asked for the card number and expiry date. They didn't even want the security number on the back of the card. It was so easy for Daniel. I know my son was wrong and should be punished, but these sites - and the credit card companies - have a responsibility too. For someone to be able to place £5,000 bets without checking whether that person is who they say they are is bonkers."
